Basseterre, St. Kitts – A feature story on St. Kitts, by Canadian travel writer Diane Slawych, has won Best Online Article at the Caribbean Media Awards Luncheon in Toronto yesterday. The story entitled, “Get Close to Nature in St. Kitts,” was one of eight presented at the Caribbean Media Awards Luncheon, one of the most anticipated events held during the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week in Toronto, December 5-10, 2011.
The story, which appeared on www.canoe.ca in April 2010, focused on the myriad ways to enjoy nature on St. Kitts and specifically mentioned the Valley of the Giants Rainforest Hike and the more physically challenging hike to the crest of the crater of Mount Liamuiga. For those who prefer not to hike, the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, with its tour of the island, was cited for glimpses of cane fields, small farms, villages, old sugar estates and abandoned windmills and chimneys. The rugged terrain, pounding surf and many secluded beaches of the south-east peninsula supported the assertion that it is one of the wildest and most picturesque places on island, while touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park was highlighted as one of the island’s must-see attractions.
“It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Ms. Slawych on her award-winning article, stated Rosecita Jeffers, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority. “Diane’s dedication to her craft and skill as a writer allows her to bring the destinations she visits alive for her readers. We are delighted that her visit to our island inspired an article of this caliber, concluded CEO Jeffers.
St. Kitts was named a top destination for 2011 by both AOL Travel and British Airways, and has just been named one of the “Top 12 Spots that should be on your list for 2012” by Caribbean Travel + Life magazine. As of summer 2011, it also ranks #1 (with Nevis) on a list of the 16 Best Caribbean Vacations by US News & World Report. Located in the northern Leeward Islands of the Caribbean, it offers a diverse tourism product developed from the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage and rich history. The island’s stunning variety of tourism attractions include hiking through the tropical rainforest, riding the scenic railway that connects the island’s former sugar plantations, visiting the Caribelle Batik factory, touring Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, the only man-made UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Eastern Caribbean, and more traditional vacation pastimes such as watersports, golf, shopping, tennis, gourmet dining, gaming at St. Kitts’ exclusive casino or simply relaxing on one of the island’s sandy beaches. Accommodations range from intimate plantation inns to larger hotels and resorts.
